Welcome to Lahaina

The Kingdom of Hawaii, land of the relentless sun

On the western shore of Hawaii lies Lahaina, a storied, tropical paradise. Nestled between warm Pacific waters and the West Maui Mountains, Lahaina is bursting at the seams with history and action, leaving residents and visitors no shortage of entertainment options. Although Lahaina is a bustling community, this close-knit town still maintains the aura and charm of the good old days, which are proudly present on historic Front Street. Whether you’re taking in Fourth of July fireworks over the waterfront or spending quieter days at the many local museums, the sun shines brightly year-round here in paradise.

Hawaii was first populated by Polynesian settlers over 1,700 years ago. Once known as Lele, Hawaiian for “relentless sun,” Lahaina was made the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii by King Kamehameha in 1802. A brick palace and other royal residences were constructed for Lahaina to serve as the center of the Hawaiian government for 50 years until the capital permanently relocated to Honolulu.
